About My Approach:

I believe that we are all striving to be our best selves, even when it seems like we’re stuck in life, or causing ourselves or others pain. My therapeutic approach is grounded in this belief, as well as the belief that forming a collaborative and trusting relationship is the foundation for any good treatment. Understanding together the reasons and context for why you engage in a particular behavior or feel a certain way can help begin to move you towards the ability to change. I also believe having a space where therapist and patient work together to hold the painful emotions we all carry around with us can be powerfully healing over time. I often tell my patients that therapy should be a space where you can develop a sense of freedom to speak about whatever is on your mind or in your heart. The therapy space is here for us to work together no matter what we talk about to help you heal and discover yourself.

I ground my treatment approach in several psychological theories, but most foundationally I operate from a self psychological treatment perspective. I find this theory speaks to my belief that we all are striving towards health in the best way we know how. Sometimes we just need some help and understanding to discover a better way of reaching the health and life we hope to achieve.

About My Approach:

My approach to therapy can be described as empathic, growth promoting, and empowering. I believe the key to moving past difficulties in your life involves developing greater awareness, understanding, and compassion for yourself in a safe and affirming space. I help clients to develop their self-awareness and compassion by offering understanding and support while also gently challenging them to move towards health and wellbeing. Developing a greater understanding of yourself, such as around your emotions, your relationships, and how your past experiences impact you, can help to reduce your distress and give you the power to change your life in the present.

My work can also be described as strengths-based and collaborative. We will build on your strengths and work together to find and begin removing the obstacles that prevent you from being your healthiest, happiest self. I see us as doing “detective work” together in which we get to be curious, playful, and even laugh when the moment calls for it as we work towards your happiness and wellbeing.

Education and Specialties:

I specialize in individual therapy with adults and have a particular interest in working with students. My areas of specialty include long-term therapy, relationship issues, family of origin issues, relational trauma, transitional issues, identity issues, LGBTQ+ issues, depression, anxiety, and women’s issues.

I earned my Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver in 2017 and earned my Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver in 2014.

about My Approach:

Life can be complex and challenging, leaving us feeling afloat, relying on old coping mechanisms and repeating old patterns. But we are not forever trapped by the  unconscious patterns of our life: there is another force that pulls us into being and into our potential to live fully and authentically. In therapy, we are given the gift of both understanding the unconscious and varied forces that have shaped us, and also the positive forces that attract us to feeling alive.

My background in therapy includes ongoing training in existential and psychodynamic psychotherapy. As your therapist, I offer a safe space for you and I to engage in a dialogue of discovery that will lead you to a greater depth of connection with yourself and the world.  Therapy is hard work, and you can expect me to be right there beside you, not to fix you, but to collaborate with you and engage with  you in the deep exploration required for change.  You will find me to be warm, present and empathetic, someone able to listen to you and support you, without judgement, through the challenges of personal change.  I offer you a space to be real, to not feel like you have to hide, to be able to express yourself as you are, to feel heard and to develop more fully a compassionate inner relationship with yourself.

I have had many experiences in life that have been rewarding in my careers as an artist in experimental theater, as an acupuncturist and herbalist, coach, and as a nurse and nurse practitioner working with people through the HIV/AIDs crisis, in oncology, gerontology, mental health/addiction, and palliative care.  Without doubt, all of my work has prepared me to work with people from different cultural and spiritual backgrounds and personal identities.  I feel that I have been given a gift in my life, at an older age to be able to have earned my license as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and to practice as a therapist.

I look forward to traversing through this inner and outer landscape on your way to living more fully and authentically in your life.

Education:

I received my Post-Master’s Certificate as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in 2023. I also earned a Master’s of Science in Oriental Medicine from the Southwest Acupuncture College in 2002 and a Master’s of Science in Nursing from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in 1995.
